Mini spectrum

Privacy policy

For Mini spectrum on Windows. Last updated 9 October 2026.

Who this is from

Mini spectrum is made by Christos P, an individual developer, not a company. Questions about this policy can go to the project's issue tracker on GitHub.

What the app does with audio

Mini spectrum draws a picture of whatever your PC is playing. To do that, Windows hands it a copy of the sound already going to your speakers, through a standard Windows feature called WASAPI loopback.

That audio is used only to work out how tall to draw the bars and where to put the line on the scope. It exists in memory for a fraction of a second and is then overwritten by the next piece of audio. Specifically, the app does not:

Only sound already on its way to your speakers is read. Nothing in the room is listened to.

What the app stores on your PC

One small text file, .mini_spectrum.json, in your user folder. It holds your display settings and where you left the widget sitting:

That file never leaves your PC. It contains no personal information, no account, no identifier and nothing about what you listened to. You can delete it at any time and the app will start again with its defaults.

What the app reads from Windows

It reads your current speaker volume level, and nothing else. Windows quietens the audio before Mini spectrum receives it, so the app divides that volume back out to stop the picture shrinking when you turn the sound down. This value is read only and is never changed, saved or transmitted.

Information collected about you

None. There are no accounts, no sign in, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no cookies and no tracking of any kind. Nothing is shared or sold, because nothing is gathered in the first place.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages and collects no information from anyone, children included.

How you can check any of this

You do not have to take the above on trust. The complete source code is public at github.com/cpavlou2323/mini-spectrum, so anyone can read exactly what it does. The program imports no networking library of any kind, which is the simplest way to confirm that nothing can be sent anywhere.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of the app ever handles information differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
